Explanation of mirlitontaine: I asked at
Word Reference forums, which is a very useful and friendly forum for help with lots of languages.
Someone there mentioned a simple musical instrument called a "mirliton" which is similar to a kazoo. There is a picture of one here,

It is a short pipe traditionally of bamboo with a vibrating paper membrane over the end and a hole near the middle.
